Èkó is what we called Lagos, before the Portuguese arrived, and at Èkó Street, we capture an essence of Lagos in jars of edible aromatic oils and “jams”. Located in the borough of Royal Greenwich in London, we project the life and vibrancy of the city and its peoples, in jazzy, zingy tastes, flavours and textures. Here is a promise: you have never tasted anything like this before. Guaranteed!       …

Do come in and have a look around. Hear our story and explore our products. We are certain you will find one or more things to interest you. Try one of our products: plain hot (Ikoyi Blend); sweet hot (Lagos Jam); sweet mild (Apapa Roast). They are all different, but not like anything you’ve tried before!

There is nothing like these on the market or in restaurants. They are crafted with a Nigerian style, which is very different from chilli products from Asia, South America or Europe. The ingredients may be similar, but the processing is from another world. This is a ‘cooked’ chilli, it has a unique character, that has its roots in West Africa.

It’ll be fantastic if you stopped by our store and picked up one or more products. We are sure that you will enjoy every one of them. Yes, you’ve had chillis, but trust us, these are different!
If you are in London, look out for our products in delicatessen, farmer’s markets and upmarket bars, and also our free tasting sessions at selected sites!

Èkó Street captures an essence of Lagos in jars of aromatic oils, sauces and “jams”. We project the life and vibrancy of the city and peoples in jazzy, zingy tastes, flavours and textures.

The business was started when my chilli passion revived, after a long period of stomach sensitivity. I wanted that “kick” in my food again. But I also wanted the rich aroma that reminds me of delectable food from years gone by. A flavour as well as the chilli heat. I couldn’t find anything that met my expectations, and so I set about cooking.

I got a revelation within a few days, and the end product was just perfect. A rich aroma and zest. I say it is reminiscent of the buzz of Lagos and the excitement in the sights/tastes of the street food scene of the city.

I have enjoyed every recipe that we have conjured since then. Here is a quick introduction. The Ikoyi Blend is a straight chilli infusion for the no-nonsense enthusiast who wants the zing, without distractions. The Lagos Jam combines the flavour of hot chilli peppers and a sweet backing, into a tango that will excite your palate. For those seeking something more tame/reserved, the Apapa Roast is highly recommended. It is a mild blend of aroma, flavour, texture and an amorous bite. The Roast is a delightful flirt. It hints at many things, but you have to be patient and perceptive, else, you will miss the dance!.

Why not try one today, or buy the trio for an expansive experience. The 40ml jars are a great introduction for the cautious explorer. The 190ml will suit the adventurous connoisseur, or patrons returning for more of the Èkó Street magic. You get more bang for your bucks 🙂

Alchemist

The word alchemy is derived from the Arabic “al-kimiya”, and historically, referred to the process of transmuting base metals into silver or gold. The word is closely linked with fables of the “philosopher’s stone”, which was reputed to perform said transmutation.

We have certainly been up to some transmutation at Èkó Street; but it is not of the dark type, and it certainly involves no stones! Truth be told, ours has not been as enriching as the medieval alchemists. However, by combining precious oil, premium chilli peppers and choice honey, we also achieved spectacular transformations. Four gems, to be precise. I will let you in on a secret; well, some aspects of it anyway 🙂

Did you know that chillis are good for you? We use carefully selected chilli peppers from approved sources, and “prepare” them over a few hours in readiness for infusion. Using an age-old formula, tweaked somewhat by many cycles of trial and error, we extract the flavour and heat from the peppers. The chilli peppers are combined with an olive oil that has been chosen to complement them, rather than grab the limelight.

The combination is carefully treated to elicit a full flavour without losing the zing. You might be forgiven for thinking you’ve let a genie out of the box, as the flavour rises out when you open one of our jars. It is quite a revelation. We’ve knocked all the rough edges off the peppers, so that all you get is the delightful goodness of well groomed oils and “jams”.
